Heroes. Sacrifices, bravery,strength. Those are all words that describe a hero.But what about our everyday heroes? The ones who do smaller deeds, but still benefit others? Although heroes are people who sacrifice and do good for others, they are also people who do the smallest things, but it makes the world a better place.
Heroes are common in the world today. They are among our everyday people, but are not always noticeable. In the passage “Where I Find My Heroes”, Oliver Stone states his meaning of heroism,”I think the meaning of heroism has a lot to do with evolving into a higher human being”. (Stone 63) In other words, not all heroes have to have superpowers or fly or breathe fire like dragons. The real world is filled with heroes from everyday life. For example; soldiers, police, firefighters, etc. are our everyday heroes. Although everyone has their own definition of a hero, our common heroes deserve just as much praise as Superman or Batman. Soldiers fight for our country and sacrifice their lives to keep us safe. I would say that is pretty heroic. Likewise, police officers stop crime and get criminals off the streets everyday and put their life on the line to bring some sort of peace to our communities. Heroes are everyday common people. They do not back away cowardly or take the easy way out. Because heroes do good deeds for others, they are not selfish. They are not weak and never doubtful of themselves. In the passage,”A definition of a Gentlemen”, it describes what a gentlemen is not.”He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by a mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip...” (Newman 79). Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing.
Generally when you think of a hero, who do you envision? Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Anyone can truly be a hero, even in real life. Heroes can be people who simply have an idea and decide to grow onto that idea and have it done. For example, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were real life heroes who started out as ordinary people but had a dream and made a huge difference in the end. Nelson Mandela, a Civil Rights activists, once said, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference” (Lazaro). Nelson Mandela was trying to say that anybody can make a difference, but it is up to that person or people to make that change. One simple change could cause any simple person to have a major change in lifestyle just because they decided to step up and do something. Furthermore, anyone can be a hero, it doesn’t matter what one’s background is, one can make even the simplest of changes and become a hero to oneself and the people around them.
Heroes, the unordinary beings with extravagant abilities, from powers and competence to skills and talents. Heroes are people who are idealized by society for their courage and individuality. Iconic and well recognized heroes like Hercules, Superman, Spiderman and Achilles are some of the few heroes known around. All heroes have a similarity to each other, for example Beowulf and Batman. A hero is someone who invests their time helping others rather than themselves. They are always conscious of their surroundings and environment. Heroes help their enemies and friends regardless of the circumstances. A hero is also someone who is humble and knows when to be protective of others and themselves. Heroes are people who acknowledge flaws, and fix mistakes, those were my own definition of a hero. In “Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas tells the truth about his illegal status in the United States. Not only was he an immigrant in the United States, he was his own hero. Vargas proved that he is a hero through code switching, bravery and honesty.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.

For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Heros are usually thought of as people who do the right thing and the heroic thing all the time. Heroism is an uncommon thing to see all the time in everyone. Many people who someone would think is very heroic is not. It it can sometimes be seen in unlikely suspects, though. S. E. Hinton highlights heroism on a low socioeconomic status through Ponyboy, Johnny, and Darry on her novel The Outsiders.

In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return. One defining characteristic of every hero is that she thinks of others before herself. Many people, when called upon to name the heroes in their lives, will mention a parent or teacher who clearly put the needs of her children, above their own. When someone acts proves he cares more about those around him than he does even about his own life, he is considered a hero. Johnny Appleseed sacrificed many things in order to help other, the same applies to us.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?
