The American Dream is a large house, expensive car, and financial freedom. For some, it includes other luxuries that they believe other people will define them by. However, another definition of success doesn’t list any of this. Success is not solely based on material goods but is rather tied to broader concepts. True success requires respect, appreciation, integrity, and patience—all of which are traits that are difficult to attain. Many people want us to believe that living a selfish life, involving nothing but the pursuit of money and fame will bring success and happiness. Sadly, this is not true. Though money can buy conveniences and comforts, one needs much more than superficial luxuries to live a successful, well-balanced life. Money does make life easier, but it does not necessarily make it better. Sometimes, success can be experienced after the accomplishment of just a short-term goal. For example, one can feel success after completing a small project at work or school. A person’s life is usually full of many little successes. Being able to pursue what you want in life defines your success. Whether it is choosing your desired career path or going places that you have always dreamed of, you will be able to look back on your life see that you made the most of your life the way you wanted to do it. As long as you believe that your accomplishing the goals you have set for your life, nobody can define how successful you are, but yourself. Many people are easily influenced by others who give them a different view of success which prevents them from following their dreams. A truly successful person is able to pursue everything they want without others telling them that their goals in life are too small.
