To evoke something is to call it forth. Evoke is from the French word ‘evoquer’ or directly from the Latin word, “evocare”, is to call out, rouse, or summon. There is an element of vocalization in the word. An evocation can be spoken, sung, or changed aloud, and Words of Power are often used. A person may evoke energy or a spirit. They can also evoke feelings, memories, and so forth. It is to invite into a person’s casting or ritual. It is inviting whatever a person is evoking in an external involvement, and not into themselves, but to surround them or be near them externally. Evoking means to me that I am inviting whatever I may be evoking into my circle, into my home, or into my personal space. I may be inviting energy, a spirit, a deity, a memory, or an emotion. What happens if a person ends up invoking a spirit instead when they only meant to evoke it? They weren’t expecting it and it could possibly lead to trouble; trouble that the person or persons involved might have a hard time getting out of. An example could be, what if a person wants to call forth a demon for whatever reason and instead they invoke it and they become possessed by that demon instead? I can give other examples that could turn out badly in an event the terms are used incorrectly, but I feel like this example is the best. So, yes, I feel like it is extremely important to know the term
