The novel Deathwatch by Robb White (New York: Bantam Doubleday Dell Books, 1972. Print) is set in the Death Valley area of California. Ben, a college student who works as a guide during the summer months, has been hired by Madec, a wealthy, businessman, to lead him to bighorn sheep which live in the desert mountains. Although at first these men have a common purpose for being in the area, the death of a prospector reveals their individual differences. A young college student who is trying to earn money for tuition, Ben works during his free time as a hunting guide. He lives with his uncle because his parents are dead and he does not have any siblings or a girlfriend. The people in his hometown know him because the community is small and tight knit. Having lived near the desert all of his life, Ben knows the area very well and has a definite understanding of the challenges faced by people trying to survive in Death Valley. When he goes into the desert, he brings an adequate water supply because he knows the dangers of dehydration. As a hunting guide he can generally find bighorn sheep in a reasonable amount of time. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children. Many people close to his home know him but small town residents know nothing of him. Madec does not have experience in desert areas like Ben does but that does not seem to stop him. He uses his torturous deeds and foul mindset to try to overcome Ben, “Madec huddled over the gun. There was an intensity in his eyes far beyond that of just hunting a sheep. It was the look of murder” (10). Being honest is a last resort for Madec.
