Hussein Nishah once said “Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given.” In other words, it is important to give people the same courtesy and respect you would want for yourself. I imagine that oftentimes deaf people are turned away and judged due to the ignorance and impatience of the hearing world. I’ve seen on various occasions that people will limit their conversations or opportunities to interaction with the deaf community to avoid their discomfort. Going to this deaf event, I wanted to people to feel comfortable conversing with me without judgment or fear. I arrived pretty early and initially there wasn’t a lot of people there at the event which made it a little more intimate . I had brought my hearing friend along early who was interest in signing up for American Sign Language I so she could get a feel of what we basically learn and how we communicate. It was also our first time at Panera Bread so this was any event full of first for me which made it a bit uncomfortable initially. My nervous begun to ease when I noticed one deaf person once before when I first started at Montclair State University . It was this man name Ed and he was with this teenage girl who was original from Maryland. I had met Ed last year at this pizza place around Montclair when I was first learn ASL he had not start signing till he was in his late teenage years. However, he father use to just gesture he’s own signs and he learned from that , so currently he just mostly fingerspelled . He had said my signing had improved which made me more confident to communicate with him and the others. While this girl who came from Maryland where there wasn’t any other deaf people so school and learnind ASL was difficult for her. Most of the time he spent practicing and testing on our signs. We discussed a lot about signs for different states and asked us if we had ever been there which was fun because my friend got to learn some new signs as well. He taught
