Date Rape on College Campuses A sexual assault that goes unreported, is a sexual assault that never happened. A serious ongoing issue that occurs within our society is date rape, however it is often handled improperly. College campuses are not the safest places to seek refuge from as a rape victim because of the unpredictable ways campuses may handle them. The injustices that occur within the university system crucially need attention because changes need to be made in order to create a healthier and safer environment for the students.Colleges often degrade the victims, encourage predatory behavior, as well as mishandle cases due to various factors when handling rape cases. College Campuses have the tendency to further protect or accommodate to the perpetrator, often times encouraging their behavior and actions. “They would say, ‘Yes I held a woman down to have sex with her against consent but that was definitely not rape,’” (Kamenetz 1) Male students have described the act of rape without considering it rape since there were no negative consequences which in many cases encourage predatory behavior and rape. In other cases the perpetrator is heavily connected to the school such as an athlete. “Six months of on campus investigation run by school administrators she says lacked basic knowledge of sexual assault and showed bias in the favor of her alleged attacker, Allan Artis, a star player n the UNC football team” (Mchugh & Farrow). The ideas being given upon college men that sex without consent is okay and has no consequences is what encourages the act of rape. As Kitchener stated in her article regarding this issue, ¨´They claimed that they wanted to investigate what had happened,´, said Cathy…’But we knew they really just wanted the tapes… They didn´t want it getting around.´¨ (Kitchener 1). The effects that the tapes could inflict upon the university may rupture their good name which is why the school did not want it getting around, not for the wellbeing of the victim. Most universities do what is best for their school not the victim, which is shown when they discourage or avoid reporting the crime. ¨… Some of the outrage seems to hinge on the appearance of institutions either discouraging or avoid reporting sex crimes¨ (Kamenetz 1). Although the universities have the right to protect their good name and image they should be obligated to do what is right for the victims and students not their school. The ideals of looking past these incidents as well as sweeping them under the rug creates an unsafe environment for their students. ¨From the perspective of a university administrator who is concerned primarily with his schools reputation, a sexual assault that goes unreported is a sexual assault that never happened¨ (Kitchener 1).
