Dark Tone In Latin American Poetry

People of Latin America are often casted out and don't know what is going on causing them to not make important decisions. Authors such as Ángel González show examples like this in his four poems. All of Latin America literature shows examples like González's, showing the reader many tones in the poetry. Authors use many themes throughout their poetry to create a recurring dark tone. Certain authors use specific themes for each of their poems, some being person vs self, person vs society, and antithesis.

We can see a reoccurring dark tone in the theme of person vs self. We can see this theme in the poem "Before I Could Call Myself Ángel González". The narrator Compares himself with everyone in this example. "Walking streets that go nowhere. The success of all failures. The insane force of dismay"(González 483). We can see this team in González's poem "Before I Can Call Myself Ángel González". He tells the reader the thing that the society does that he does not like. "[W]ombs of women, and babies and more babies, incessantly fusing into another body"(González 482). The actions of this society is being judged and affect the narrator. Another use of person vs society can be shown in the poem "Yesterday". The narrator is watching as people are doing what they do daily being shown when the author writes," sadness invaded hearts and there was a distinct panic of movement toward the trolley"(González 483). The storyteller is explaining what is going on in society's life. This theme can finally be shown in the poem "The Future". The thoughts and actions of the society is being spoken about. "[O]f illusion and tears the stars predicted and the heart awaits and that is always, always, always distant"(González 485). González is telling that everyone is going to be sad no matter what.
