After watching the movie Darius Goes West, I have gained some extremely beneficial knowledge that will help me throughout my life. Darius Goes West is about a young boy who was born with a genetic disease that over time attacks muscles in the human body, which is called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Darius is fifteen years old in the movie and wants to “pimp his ride”. With help from his community and friends, throughout the movie they travel across the country to go and see if the show Pimp My Ride would actually customize his wheelchair. As they travel across the country, many problems arise, but nothing stops the friends in their pursuit to get Darius to Pimp My Ride’s location. Most people just like myself would say why would it be so difficult …show more content…

Both intrinsic barriers and external barriers are what sometimes causes problems along the way of accomplishing tasks. As I watched the video, the external barriers were immediately obvious. When the crew went to the first gas station they noticed that Darius could not get in to use the restroom because there was no ramp. The whole building was surrounded by a raised pavement. The station could have had accessible ways to get in like open entry ways or open low pavements, but they did not. This makes me ponder how many other places around our country are like this. While watching the movie, I did notice one particular attitude that stuck out to me. While Darius and the crew were eating at a restaurant, they made a bet for Darius to eat a spoonful of this really hot wasabi. They were having a great time and Darius totally took the offer. They said they would give him ten dollars. After Darius took the spoonful of wasabi and started basically laughing and crying at the same time, there was a person in the background who thought that his friends were making fun of him. In the video, his friends said that he is exactly like one of them. There is nothing different about Darius and no reason why they would make fun of him, just because he is using a wheel chair. They said that if they weren’t laughing at him there would be something wrong because they thought it was so funny. They weren’t making fun of him. It just goes to show that people have very different perceptions and should not assume things. Another negative societal attidue was the mtv producers of the show Pimp My Ride. Darius and the crew wrote multiple letters to them and they would write back weeks later saying that they will not make a show and upgrade Darius’s wheelchair. Once the crew arrived at the Pimp My Ride shop, the workers were more than happy to speak with Darius and show him around. The crew said it was almost if they had no clue that they were writing
