Florence finally became a single nation in 1861, during the centuries leading up to that it was a loose confederation, each with their own government. The only thing uniting the regions was the Catholic Church, which had tremendous military and political power, so powerful that even a street fight between two rival families could end with the Pope dispatching peacekeeping troops. At that time Florence was politically divided into two groups: the Ghibellinis, who believed Italians should pledge their loyalty to the emperor of Rome and the Guelphs, who believed that the Pope should be the leader of Italy. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born March 6,1475 in Caprese, Italy. His father was a government agent in Caprese and his mother died when he was six years old ("Michelangelo Buonarroti"). When Michelangelo was 13 he was an apprentice to a painter named Domenico Ghirlandaio. In addition to being an apprentice, he also studied sculpture with Bertoldodi Giovanni ("Michelangelo Buonarroti"); at 17 he created his earliest sculpture. Michelangelo was an ambitious artist who took on big projects. In 1827 he amalgamated (joined) the Carbonari but was disappointed. In 1830 he took part in the revolts and was arrested then sent to France. In 1831 he formed young Italy when he was 26 years old in Marseilles and was based on Mazzini's own views of how revolution was to succeed in Italy.

In this tale, a man named Dante the Pilgrim takes a voyage into Hell with Virgil. They go through many different levels and circles of Hell that each represents an important sin or crime. Though it is a highly controversial book, there is one specific passage that is important to finding success. In this quote, Virgil is speaking to Dante who has tired along his path through the seventh circle of Hell: “‘Up on your feet! This is no time to tire!’ my Master cried. ‘The man who lies asleep will never waken fame, and his desire and all his life drift past him like a dream, and the traces of his memory fade from time like smoke in the air, or ripples on a stream. Now, therefore rise. Control your breath, and call upon the strength of soul that wins all battles unless it sink in the gross body’s fall. There is a longer ladder yet to climb: this much is not enough. If you understand me, show that you mean to profit from your time.’” (Pg. 207, lines 46-57) By careful analysis and critique, we can pick apart this passage and see the important themes portrayed in Dante’s famous book The Inferno and how they can relate to success.

He wrote, drew, experimented and challenged what others could never imagine possible until at least 300 years after his death. He has been considered throughout history to be the most brilliant man who ever lived. On May 16, 2017 I interviewed Antonio Cuevas about what it means to be American to him. Life for Antonio has been hard because he came to America with the ideal American Dream every Hispanic has. During his life he faced struggles with no knowledge of writing or reading but he came along way without understanding of life in this country. The North Italian states were better economically and politically than the Southern Italian states. This led to a less feeling of nationalism since the North and South were different and was one of the reasons why the early attempts in 1821, 1830 and 1848 for unification failed. A group called Carbonari was working towards unification of the Italian states. Carbonari meant the Charcoal Burners and it was a secret society. In early 19th century a Carbonari named Mazzini brought up the notion of “Young Italy”. He emphasized on the one Italian state. He soon becomes the famous Italian soldier. Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Florence, Italy in 1469 to a middleclass family. The time in which Machiavelli lived Italy as a country was not united but divide and split into little providences and republics. He latter became responsible for the Florentine militia against the Medici government and rule. When the Medici power reclaimed Florence Machiavelli was arrested for conspiracy he was tortured and then banished from Florence. During his banishment he wrote the book The Prince in 1513 which is dedicated to the new prince of Florence Lorenzo De Medici. Dante Alighieri's Influence on Italian Culture. Dante Alighieri was a very well known and influential poet in early literature. He was not only a poet, he was also a philosophical thinker, an active politician, and a religious visionary'; (Holmes 1). Dante was born in Florence in 1265, into the Guelph political party, one of the two main parties in Florence. The Guelphs were aristocrats and nobles.
Justice is one of the major building block that society is built upon. It gives people a sense of retribution when they have been wronged. In Dante’s Inferno, justice is served in the supernatural realm. Throughout this play, the reader is exposed to the inner working of hell and the nine circles of specialized punishment it is composed of. Justice, in Dante’s Inferno, differs from justice in the mortal world in that it is decided, not by humans, but by God. However, it is not God’s justice that is portrayed in this divine comedy. While this divine comedy depicts justice coming from God, the justice in the Inferno is based on Dante’s personal views of the severity of the sin and the sinner. This paper will examine this issue by looking into the life of Dante and the potential reasons for his rankings of the sin pertaining to specific circles of hell.
I would first like to cover religion. Like most places there are a wide variety of different religions, but in the Italian culture most people are raised to be catholic.
