A synthesis of Dances with wolves from a leadership point of view. In the movie, “Dances With Wolves” the main character Kevin Costner is assigned to a remote army outpost, so remote that he is the only army personnel there. Without any contact with many outsiders, he finally becomes friends with the Indians after a long period of isolation. As the movie progresses on, the main character moves from being just friend of the tribe to an actual member of the tribe. This is ultimately a result of little to no communication between the main character and his commanders. In the absence of communication by the leader, team members will begin to take on the behavior and beliefs of the tribe. As a leader, it is very important to listen to your team members. What you hear from them can be an indication of where the company is heading to. When the language of your team member sympathizes more with those outside the company, then you may have a bigger issue to deal with. A clear example is when a salesperson buys into the myth that your product is no different from the competition and the buying decision is made only on price. In the movie the main character abandons his uniform and becomes more and more like the new tribe he joined. He behaves like them and dress like them. By changing the way he dresses he identified more with the tribe rather than the military he worked for. It is important for a leader to be aware when his team members are identifying and believing in another company’s strategic direction and the objectives .This is where a good leader intervenes and rebuilds communications and reestablishes missions and goals of the company with his team members. He must provide a clear vision of the goals. If leaders fail to take action at this very step, employees will begin to leave their current employer and migrate toward the other company or tribe.
