The field of computing in the area of big data is undergoing a major change, enabled by wireless networks and the increase in the usage of mobile devices with access to the web-based information; memory efficiency is imperative. For this it is expected that most CPU-intensive computing may either happen in servers housed in large datacenters, For example: many-core high-performance computing (HPC) platforms or cloud computing and other webservices.
It is expected that in terms of performance, reliability, and power consumption; memory system will be problematic.
Long DRAM memory latencies have always been a problem. Also knowing the fact that only little can be done about the latency problem, DRAM vendors have chosen to optimize their designs for improved bandwidth, increased density and minimum cost-per-bit.
In the 1990s keeping the above objectives, DRAM architectures, standards and interfaces were instituted and are persisting since then.
But the traditional DRAM architectures are highly inefficient from a future system perspective and revamp is needed.
