The concept of “tuning in” is vital for positive practice with clients. More specifically, the ability to “tune in” to the issues faced by Fernando, Rosa and their children, may enable a social worker to better assist them in resolving their given challenges. For instance, a key aspect of “tuning in” relative to Fernando, Rosa and their children may be a social worker’s understanding of their cultural background, environment and the cultural characteristics associated with El Salvador. More specifically, knowledge of cultural norms within El Salvador and Central America may assist in understanding Rosa, Fernando and their concern for their children. Lastly, it is vitally important, relative to “tuning in”, that a social worker utilizes the strength perspective. Saleebey (1996, p. 296) explains that the strengths perspective dictates that social worker’s should focus on the strengths of a client in order to overcome their current challenges. Relative to Rosa, a worker could make evident to her the range of strengths she possesses in order to show empathy and influence change. For instance, within the given case study a worker should personally acknowledge the strength Rosa, Fernando and their children have shown in moving to a different country with little to no close support. Furthermore, Rosa’s voluntary interaction with a social worker relative to the issues Ana is experiencing demonstrates her strength in wanting to see change in her daughter’s behaviour. For instance, relative to Rosa and Fernando a critique of the information received within the referral from the STTARS social worker before interacting with Rosa, would be useful in better understanding the families’ situation. Furthermore, an understanding of the client’s developmental stage would be useful in order to communicate effectively. More specifically, an understanding of Ana’s developmental stage would be helpful in better understanding her behaviour and advising Rosa, relative to her concerns. In addition, an understanding of some of the issues presented by Rosa in her referral information would be extremely useful. For instance, research on sleep issues relative to the concerns Rosa has risen, may be useful. Moreover, research which deciphers possible agencies which may assist Rosa in her sleeping issues may be useful to best assist the client and appease her concern for her health and her children. In addition, resources, which focus on issues within marriages, may also be useful in both better understanding Rosa and her relationship with Fernando. More specifically, it is thought that the sourcing of information which focuses on the strain both immigration, work commitments and children can impart on a marital relationship may be useful in better understanding Rosa.
