Cultural Experiences I very seldomly find myself going out of my comfort zone to try different things that I am not familiar with. I decided to try something new; although, I was skeptical at first I took a step out of my comfort zone and tried the Japanese cuisine, sushi. I chose trying sushi as my topic because; it was such a rare occurrence for myself to try this cuisine. It is definitely a popular choice of food in the United States, but I myself have always been hesitant to try it considering it is raw. I typically like my food thoroughly cooked. I certainly thought I would absolutely hate sushi, because of the whole raw concept and I have always thought it smelled bizarre, which can ruin my appetite. Therefore, this was the night that changed my opinion about sushi. I finally caved and decided to try it; I was pleasantly surprised to find myself very fond of the sushi. I did not want to admit it, but it tasted spectacular. It definitely had a different taste, but overall I took back my initial opinion on the Japanese cuisine. I since then have tried it again; in fact we have sushi regularly now. This experience made me less skeptical toward other cultures’ cuisines. I wasted many years being picky towards something new that ended up being one of my favorite meals. Also not only am I less skeptical towards the different cuisines, I now find myself appreciating different cultures in a way that made me want to try new things as much as possible. It is inspiring that people from all over the world can come to America, start up a restaurant, and bring a piece of their culture to us. If that would not be able to happen, I would not have had the chance to try sushi unless I had went to japan, which I have never been so I feel it is such a wonderful experience to have been a part of. I do not think that many people fully understand how humbling it is to be able to try different cultural experiences in our own
