Frequently music curriculums also call for culture to play a role in learning objectives and to achieve state standards like Indiana Standard 9 RESPONDING TO MUSIC: Understanding music in relation to history and culture. To make curriculum accessible and applicable to students’ current life, it is important to incorporate the cultural backgrounds that are found in their community. In an effort to do so I incorporated culture into a mixed brass ensemble lesson (Artifact 2). This lesson gave opportunity for discussion to share personal experiences with holiday celebrations during December. On Halloween weekend, 2009, I had the opportunity to attend a major music festival in New Orleans – Voodoo Experience. Prior to this assignment, I had no intention of going to this event. However, as I began to piece together my topic and goals for this project, this became my best opportunity to experience what I have set out to understand. The purpose of this music-culture research report is to chronicle Jewish music in New Orleans – specifically the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. I gave up the typical Halloween experience in order to seek out a band that seemed to be the ultimate blend I was looking for – a Jewish klezmer band that is distinctly New Orleans. In addition to this show, I was able to enjoy many great bands playing at the festival. I also make a point to catch the headlining bands, Jane’s Addiction and Kiss, both of which put on great shows.
As a native of Miami, Florida, I have witnessed the many cultural changes that have taken place over the years. As an educator teaching within the nation’s fifth largest public school district for the past 25 years, I have had a great amount of exposure to the cultural diversity that makes up the public school, and I have become very familiar with challenges, family issues, and cultural differences that can influence the educational performance of my students. I have developed an understanding that in order to provide the most successful learning environment for culturally diverse student’s, teachers must be able to provide classroom instruction that is free of personal bias and which addresses the diversified cultural learning needs of every student. Too many schools are not set up to give students an education that teaches them to love learning and takes their individual needs into account (Castleman & Littky, 2007).
Cultural credits have both many pros and cons, but the negative side of them far outweigh the positives. Bad timing, the need for sacrifice, pulling of attendance from other events, and the small amount of respect for the events all are very large issues. Forcing students to go to something that they do not find interest in is not the way to “enrich learning beyond the classroom.”
El Cajon Valley High School is filled with love and happiness that every single student shares their moments together. As we all know, there are so many different type of students in our school and they have came from many different countries that have different culture. Our school joins everyone from all over the world and unites them together. We call this unity through diversity in our school. One of the amazing event in our school that the majority of the students enjoy watching is multicultural week. Multicultural is where some of the students in our school participate to present their own country by performing or holding a flag or do any activity that reflect the traditions of their country.
In my culture, music helps to explain my cultural identity. Palestinian people tend to play loud arabic music and parties and occasions. The music brings people together as a family while they are dancing and having fun. Arab women wear long patterned dresses and arab men wear certain designed clothes over their head while doing a dance called dabke. Dabke is where everyone links arms and hops around in a circle doing a certain dance according to the song. I love watching my family have fun at events like this. Some may say music is just music; a song is just a song. However, music plays an enormous role in our psychology, because a single song has the ability to bring about many kinds of thoughts and emotions in the listener. Music is subtly one of the main factors in which people identify with certain groups and establish their belonging in society. It shapes people’s perspectives on how the world functions and the roles they play within it. Music can function the same way in a culture; it can reflect many of the culture’s values and ideologies. Music can have many effects on culture and the people’s idea of who they think they are within that culture. Musical elements such as dynamics, texture, form, timbre, melody, instruments, etc., have been used to thoroughly explore each kind of music from different areas of the world, with an emphasis in music from Africa, India and Indonesia. These aspects of music go far beyond just music itself. Culture also plays a huge role in music and the accompanying musical elements. Each country and culture has a different style and distinctiveness that add to what makes the music of that certain culture unique. Music in Africa may differ dramatically from music in Indonesia or India not only due to those certain elements but also due to how it is interpreted by people and what it represents for those people. There are different disciplines within the humanities, but there is one that I feel that has influenced my cultural identity the most…music. Most of the public school systems in America do not give the arts and music departments in schools enough money to thrive and grow. Public Schools in the United States of America lack funding for the arts and music programs in the school systems.
Although music educators often experience challenges in the inclusion setting, most agree that music is beneficial to all students, including students with disabilities (SWD). This literature review includes areas of concerns and challenges that music educators often experience in the inclusive setting as a result of (a) lack of training in special education, (b) lack of planning time, (c) scheduling issues and (c) lack of experience using music therapy (MT) practices in the inclusive music setting (Spohn, 2008). Nevertheless, it is possible that because music educators teach a variety of learning and behavioral needs, the most challenging areas perceived in the inclusive setting comprise (a) developing social, (b) appropriate behavior, (c) communication and (d) academic skills in SWD. Therefore, because of a significant growth of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) mainstreamed into the least restrictive environment (LRE), music educators need to become knowledgeable and conscious of the complexities and heterogeneity of the population. The following topics will be discussed in the literature review; these include (a) challenges of music educators in the inclusive setting, (b) benefits of music therapy (MT), (c) impact of music participation on children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and (d) behavioral, social and language development of SWD.
In some way, music affects everyone. Whether it is, a young girl?s favorite song on the radio, a college student?s escape from reality or a form of entertainment to a married couple, music brings everyone together. Music definitely affects the lifestyles of people in many different ways. The diverse styles of music makes people look and act differently. Music has many different levels. To me, levels meaning; the more independent and progressive the music is, the more the fans take it to the extreme. Music creates style. It causes people to talk, act, and dress the way they do. I hope to discover how much music influences people, especially college students. Also, the more fascinated they are the more influences it has to them. I would like to prove, that to some, music is nothing more than the pop song playing on the radio in the car, and to others, it is a major part of their life. It is very interesting to me, to learn the effects music has toward people. Music impacts everyone in some way (positive or negative), but I think it impacts college students the most. I would like to know the reasons people are listening to music they buy. Also, the reasons certain groups are more popular than others.
When I first started this class, I was not sure what to expect in terms of the overall content. Would I be listening to various pieces of music and then have to identify them? This class turned out to be so much more. First, I think one of the most important elements in learning about music, is learning about the history that shapes each piece.
