Cultural competence is the process by which individuals and systems respond respectfully and effectively to people if all cultures, languages, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of individuals, families, and communities, and protects and preserves the dignity of each (Berg-Weger, 2013). Cultural competence is a very important skill the social worker needs possess. It will helps the social worker to understand families from different background and help the clients get the resources that fit their own needs. Living in a country where they are the minority, the Sanchez family has find it hard to adjust. Some of the members are undocumented which makes it difficult to trust anyone feared they will be deported. When it comes to cultural diversity, I can somewhat relate. I am African American woman. We have traditions and other diversity factors within our race that we hold dear. We have both experience the “isms”. I believe that is where the trust can start. I am not saying that a person from another race cannot help them but I believe because we have been through some similar difficulties as being a minority. I do not have a lot knowledge about the Latino culture. Based what I have seen, they value family and working. Also, they value their religion. If I was to work with the Sanchez family, I have to understand their culture. I would help them to understand that they can trust me. I let them go at their pace. Even though there made be a language barrier, I will see to it that I will have way to communicate either through interpreter or even a member family that speak English may can assist. I have heard some people get upset if a foreigner speaks in their native language. I understand why they do it. They are very proud of their heritage and their culture.
