Literary: The literary approach to analyzing literature requires that the analyst focus on specific items including, the plot, illustrations, setting, and complexity. The emphasis is the story’s impact within itself, without considering the context that it was written or the reader’s schema. The story will maintain a “fixed meaning” over time (Bothelo & Rudman, 2009). When using the literary approach, the author’s language and intent is questioned to gain more information about the character’s interests and motives. How is the cultural power “created, circulated, negotiated and reconstructed” ((Bothelo & Rudman, 2009). According to Bothelo and Rudman, it is vital to consider the sociopolitical and historical layers along with the social interactions. (p. 31). Critical multicultural analysis cannot be viewed without considering power. Power of the individuals and the cultural backgrounds of the characters are considered. How is power derived and what effect does it have on the characters and the reader. Teachers should use critical multicultural analysis to derive lessons and generate questions to make improvements in cultural understandings and the interactions of each student. This approach requires thinking beyond the story and considering what cultural and social change can and should happen. Social improvement is the goal. Many of the six approaches are simplistic and limiting, including the feminism and cultural approaches. Viewing a text from a single viewpoint, such as gender roles or the literary approach, minimizes growth from the reader and maybe missing the main idea of the story.
