Have you ever wondered what true courage is? According to Atticus Finch in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, “Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” In my opinion, I feel that my definition of courage is similar to Harper Lee’s. Although you know it may not turn out in your favor, you still do the best you can because you know it’s the right thing to do. As defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary courage is the “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty.” The majority of dictionaries will tell the reader the same thing, that courage is the ability to overcome something although it may be unwanted or difficult. For many, they have a different definition of courage. When I searched to see what other people thought of courage I came across several different answers. Some say that courage is when a person has the ability to act disregarding their feelings or the potentially bad things that could come from the situation. Other answers were given in the form of examples, stating that saying sorry in situations where a person is in the wrong takes courage. One explanation says that courage is getting out of bed and living out our daily lives. To many the definition of courage …show more content…
Many people confuse courage for not being scared of what could happen, Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important that fear.” Courage isn’t being able to act like nothing will scare you or make life more difficult, it’s the ability to realize that something will be difficult or scary and you overcome the difficulty. Courage is the ability to overcome hardship, not avoid it or create more of it to make yourself seem more
Courage is all around the world even if it’s not known worldwide. As for in Madeleine L’Engle ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ courage is considered to be exceptionally major as it raises awareness to trust in the people close to you. Everyone doubts themselves at a point in their life but overcoming that unresolved issue with yourself is important, sometimes just staying true to yourself is the best thing you can do. Just as Meg held on to her father and believed with all her heart that he’s still out there and will come back to their family even as all hope seems lost. That indicated Meg being a strong hearted person. Meg was courageous when she trusted her friends even when most of the situation was turning against their favors. This action and many more that she did made us believe that courage is not just a term, it’s a 7 letter word filled with hope and love, telling us to never give up. As Meg considered backing off from the chaos but the love she has for her beloved brother Charles Wallace snaps her back to reality resulting her to find the
Courage is not an everyday thing. There have been times in our history when such things have shown in people and in nations. Courage is not just standing up for something courage is when you are maybe even scared but still do it. That is an example of courage. In the story Denmark: A Nation of Heroes it really explains how courage can make a big difference.
If courage is truly what Mary Anne Rudmacher says it is, then I am all too well familiar with such courage. The characters in each of my books exemplify courage as well. Rick Deckard exemplified courage by doing something that completely went against his ideals and that he really didn’t want to do. Jack exemplified courage by trying to take down the rogue swarms even though he nearly died trying to do so on more than one occasion. The best example of all was Helena, ruthlessly going after Demetrius even though he despised her so. Whenever she got shut down, she came back swinging. People don’t necessarily need to be proud to be brave. They just need to find in themselves the strength to get back on their feet and try again later.
What does it mean to be courageous? The dictionary definition of courage is “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”. The dictionary says to enable the mind to face a danger, for example, a 21-year old named Tommy had just came out of a burning building and he realizes his 10-year old sister is still inside. Tommy doesn’t wait for firemen to come, he gets the courage himself to save his sister even though he can get hurt or killed. This story talks about an act of courage the character gets and saves his sister’s life by putting himself at risk. To be courageous means to stand up for your friends or to stand up for yourself.
Having courage is having the ability to face your fear, pain, or a difficult obstacle. You can stand up for what you believe is right. With the ability of courage, you can face anything. Courage is being heroic/brave for you or for someone else. Courage can also make you fearless!
The dictionary definition of courage as per the Oxford English Dictionary is ‘the ability to do something that frightens one’, but is it really that simple? Courage is often portrayed as physical bravery in books and movies which see the hero making a sacrifice for the greater good. However, courage can be more than a physical act. Think of social activists and those speaking out against injustice. They too are displaying courage, albeit a different type of courage. We can also consider entrepreneurs like Walt Disney or Steve Jobs as being courageous people given the financial risks that they took in order to pursue a dream. There are different types of courage ranging from physical strength and endurance to mental stamina, innovation and emotional
Courage is an important factor in defining one as an individual. Courage gives one the ability to make decisions based on fear, and pushes you to step out of your comfort zone. Being courageous is important, it helps you help others, take risks, and stand up for yourself.
True courage to me is something that we have on a day to day bases. It takes courage for me to stand here and talk to you all, but True courage is way more harder. True courage is like standing up to "Goliath" in the coliseum or telling the truth to a broken window. Courage is something we have to have in order for us to not run away in fear after you did something wrong. There is a story called David and Goliath, that story is my favorite because David, was a sheep herder, on one of his trips herding his sheep's, a huge man named Goliath who was nine and a half feet tall came into town. Goliath was setting a competition of who can beat him at a fight. David said he would and David was six feet tall, so comparing a six foot man against a nine and a half foot man is
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage wasn’t the absence of fear, but triumph over it.” This perfectly captures my personal definition of the term courage. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines courage as “mental
What is courage? As stated on dictionary.com, courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Being courageous is the doing something that you know could be difficult, whether it is being yourself, taking risks, or not giving up when times get hard.
The word courage has a powerful meaning and effect that unfortunately not all of us are aware of. This term differs from one person to the other. Some people think that courage is facing difficulties with no fear. For example, Jews were an obstacle in Hitler’s way to success because of their political and financial power; therefore, he stood up with no fear and blamed them for a war he himself started. Shockingly, people believed him. So what he basically did was conquer an obstacle, yet his actions caused destruction, damage and most importantly grief and sorrow. Could he then be labelled courageous for not being afraid? I don’t think so.
“Courage is doing what you are afraid to do. There is no courage unless you're scared.”~ Eddie Rickenbacker. Courage is among the most important characteristic of any person. It is what makes leaders, makes the brave and it is what has shaped the present.
Courage can mean that you have the strength to do something for your neighborhood or for the entire world. Mentioned in Source 3, what it means to be courageous is to devote your soul toward finding an answer. It also mentions that being courageous means to not fear what is ahead of you and to just keep on pushing forward. This is what courage means to Michelle Obama.
I define courage as what happens when something is not working out, and no one is trying to step up to whatever the problem is or the people trying to fix cannot fix it. Another way to define courage is stepping up to the challenge that no one else will. Another way to define courage is facing your fear even when you don’t want to and you are being overwhelmed. Someone I know that I believe lives up my definition is a boy at school and he always steps up to the leader role, even when no one else is taking it and when there is a problem, he will try his hardest to have it fixed so that the school can run better. He also is not afraid to face his fears and try to overcome his fears.
Courage is a mystery and our beliefs will drive us toward a direction that most would think improbable or impossible. Putting much effort into the thought of the definition can leave people thinking for quite some time, or with the common quick response of being brave. Courage is subjective for the most part, but still remains to be in the eye of the beholder. Situations vary and outcomes all end differently depending on the chemistry of the situation. The courageous drive of a church going African American like Obama to defeat law school to benefit the living conditions of poor people. His courage began with a spark of determination long before manifesting into the 44th president. Courage can also give strength to a loving family man to die doing what he believed in; even though the cost of doing so ended many lives. The belief of righteousness according to one's self is the main source in many courageous acts. The situation may be exactly the same, but after one aspect of it is changed then the thought of something needing to be done has surfaced. Looking at the bigger picture as they say has become relevant, and a different course of action has been determined. Like a group of people taken hostage, but only until knowing the intentions of the high jackers is when everyone's foresight has been altered. The source of courage is determination, strength and the belief of the individual. With all these combine one can accomplish great tasks.
