Cost Reduction by Monitoring the Oil and Gas Pipelines Corrosion

431 Words1 Page

The purpose of this research paper is to discuss the importance of corrosion monitoring technology and development in the industrial oil section in terms of cost reduction. An investigation of the most common used ways to monitor the corrosion rate and a comparison of the monitoring methods; in term of applicability, losses savings and monitoring speed was carried on to give the people who read this research an idea of these methods.

Using the data found in the resources and the data collected through the survey and interviews, a general idea of the importance of developing corrosion monitoring methods can be concluded. Because of the money losses that corrosion cause each year, serious measurements had to take place to try and stop such huge losses or at least reduce them to their minimum levels. In the survey, 100% voted that the corrosion monitoring is critically important in the industrial areas.

Deciding what the best ways to monitor the corrosion rate are; is another idea that can be concluded from the data provided in this research. Different monitoring methods are available, but this research focused on the most common used ones. Coupons method for example is bitterly used in testing the materials, to know there properties and corrosion resistivity, before implementing them in the design or structure. Fiber optics, which is the newest method, provide the fastest monitoring readings and results, which means faster response to the corrosion development. The votes on the survey also provided some idea on how fast a method can give results, and also how much each method can save.

The worst implication in applying any corrosion monitoring system is the integrating part. This means that applying the corrosion monitoring system for the first time needs a good understanding and well awareness of development in this field. To decide on what the best method is for the company and how much a company could invest in a system, needs a lot of knowledge. The company most also be willing to invest some money in updating the monitoring system they are using and also in maintenance from time to time. It is also a good chance to mention that corrosion monitoring data in itself can be of relatively limited value. It must be transformed into information for decision making purposes.

While it is impossible to monitor a corrosion problem away, it is possible to use corrosion monitoring to better understand such problems and implement effective solutions.
