47% of households in the United States have a dog. Approximately 80 million dogs are owned by households in the United States. (¨Pet Statistics¨) With only 241 Corgis registered with the Kennel Club in the UK, there was a fear of extinction. Corgis Are proven to be the 24th most popular dog in the US, with over 5,000 registrations to the kennel club in 2013 alone. ("Everyone Chill Out, Corgis Are Not Becoming Endangered.") Corgis have a long history explaining their playfulness and their cute yet dwarf-like height. The Corgi originated from Wales, first seen around 1925. To establish the corgi as a real breed and establish standards for the dog, Captain J. P. Howell created the Welsh Corgi Club. “corgi” in the Welsh language means “dwarf dog”, which is in relation to their short height of 10cm-12cm. Corgis were originally bred to herd cattle, their height was intentionally bred short to avoid the kicks of the larger animals.
