The Consequences of Poverty on Children Income poverty is the condition of not having enough income to meet fundamental requirements for food, shelter, and clothing. Since kids are dependent on others, they enter or avoid poverty depending on their family’s economic circumstances. Children are often unlikely to change their family’s conditions by themselves, until they approach adulthood. Poverty is a growing problem that affects the lives of millions of children each day, but together we can help lessen the impact. Children living in poverty are more likely to suffer behavioral problems. The American Psychological Association is a professional organization with thousands of researchers who represent psychology in the United States. According to their research on poverty, “Chronic stress associated with living in poverty has been shown to adversely affect children’s concentration and memory which may impact their ability to learn. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that in 2008, the dropout rate of students living in low-income families was about four and one-half times greater than the rate of children from higher-income families (8.7 percent versus 2.0 percent). ” The stress that children and adolescents deal with on a daily basis while living in poverty hinders their ability to focus and retain information in school. Schools that belong to low income communities can be under resourced, which means meeting the the students’ learning needs will be difficult.
