The Millennial Generation, Generation Y, Digital Natives, and Generation Me are some of the many names given to my generation. However, the “Apathetic Generation” or “Generation Money” would be more candid names that reflect our atrocious tendencies towards conformity, greed and utter idiocy. Particularly, the preceding generations declared that a “normal” being is one who conformed to a vast number of people. This ideology of a “normal” being still prevails today as we have wholly embraced it and have allowed it to seep into our subconscious. That is to say, we have modified our inner thoughts and beliefs to mimic society to ensure that we are not cast aside and repressed. Due to this fact, we have become greedy in order to gain the attention we seek. Avarice defines happiness for us as we believe that happiness lies in the eyes of the beholder of wealth. Our pursuit of attaining riches blindfolds us and we lose our ability to think rationally, thus, resulting in apathy. Furthermore, my generation gives fame to illiterate buffoons who sell their bodies on the internet, and to those who beguile us into believing they are geniuses because of their collection of green papers. We fail to understand the prominence of doctors, scientists, inventors, and some politicians who have granted us the tranquil life we have today as we solely see the melodramatic and evasive celebrities that media hypes up. Hence, we are marionettes controlled by media. We worship these “stars” by pasting their photos on all walls, billboards, shirts, and wallets, and thus, we are revamping our definition of God solely because they are wealthy. Therefore, “The Necklace” is a sincere representation of my generation as it plainly exhibits our defects and the power we have presented to
