Based upon the visual imagery shown throughout the short film, it is evident that the principles addressed within fraternities seem to be underlining conformity. Throughout the video, there are a multitude of pastimes such as sports, drinking, and paddling that is often representative of the ‘bro-culture’ established through institutions like fraternities. In itself, it almost seemed as if there were subliminal messaging occurring throughout these visuals, and the inert masculinity that is required throughout most of these activities seem advocated for. Also, analyzing the images of each of the fraternity members, there are no distinguishing features within any of them. All of these guys are caucasian, heterosexual, athletically-built ‘men’.
In the movie Antz, power, conformity, and social inequality played a big role on its plot, characterization and theme. The movie had representations from the collectivism point of view, the political principle of centralized social and economic control and individualism.
I myself am from a very “awkward” dichotomy. The reason for that is that I grew up in Oak Cliff Texas, a low socioeconomic neighborhood with the a very criminal atmosphere. However, my father was able to obtain upward mobility through his construction business that he built, therefore I have always been financially well off. Since I grew up in Oak Cliff and attended an inner city public high school my classmates were mostly of low socioeconomic background and well, the nature of their behavior is very much like mine. Now when I attended A&M I decided to join a fraternity. There is “Latino” fraternities available for students to join on campus but I joined one that is recognized by the IFC (Intra Fraternity Council). This is one of the barriers amongst universities’ Greek life systems themselves. As described in the book, Greek life systems generate a barrier where students of low socioeconomic status find it harder to join. The fraternities and sororities that are recognized by the “IFC” are those that are categorized by the student body as “cool or better” organizations. Those that aren’t recognized by the IFC are seen as the “poor or gay” organizations. Those fraternities that are recognized by the IFC on campus as far as I know are all white. Latino or Black fraternities and sororities aren’t recognized by the IFC, at least at A&M. I am the only Minority in the fraternity that I am apart of, and I sometimes recognize that I am different in different aspects than most of the members and can feel the “isolation” that is described in the book. Once my fraternity was having an event and everyone was required to pitch in 30$ towards supplies for it, and the way that the money is gathered is through a mobile application where people can pay with their credit cards. Walking around a university’s campus any day of the week, one sees an array of Greek letters worn proudly by young men and women in the Greek system. Fraternities and sororities play a big part in a university. The Greek system can also be an easy target to direct criticism. There are those who oppose the Greek system and those who embrace it. Evan Wright opposes the Greek system in his article “Sister Act” that was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine. He uses examples from students at Ohio State University in Columbus to show his disapproval of the way sororities are now days. He portrays sorority girls as catty conformists who are obsessed with partying with fraternity guys. Evan Wright’s insubstantial claim is full of half-truths in reference to alcohol consumption, conformity, and the purpose of sororities; therefore, his critical position that sororities are corrupt is not credible.
The novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley first published in 1932, presents a very bleak out look of what future society will be like. The novel presents a future of where almost total conformity is a carefully guarded aspect of society. Even before one is "decanted" they are conditioned to fill a specific roll and to act a certain way.

Fraternities are more than just partying and “hangin’ with the bros.” Fraternities are over 100 years old and filled with traditions, values, and brotherhood. Fraternities have stood strong since the early 1800’s, with rich history and culture. Every fraternity has founding fathers that represent a certain value of the fraternity.

Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
Little Terror with a Dose of Awe Looking at the movie The Village, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, there are four pieces of criteria that I used; audience’s feelings, audience interest, originality and genre to decide if this movie was worth others seeing. When looking at the genre, I wanted to see how well it lined up with the movie’s preview. The feeling of the audience is also important because that is what makes the lasting impression. Feeling the emotions the character faces, anger, sadness, suspense, or shock will ultimately determine if the movie is great enough to leave a lasting mark imprinted in the viewers’ brain. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
Participating in greek life is a great way to make friends, have an instant connection with certain people across the nation, and learn leadership skills and time management along the way. University of Virginia and Clemson University both have prominent greek systems that rule the social scene. As stated on, “Fraternity and Sorority Life” for the Clemson website, “Fraternity and Sorority Life is represented in numerous student organizations and for many, is an integral part of the Clemson Experience”. This quote shows the significance that greek life plays on the social scene at the University. Fraternities and Sororities compete in intermurals to doing community service. Greek life also helps build character. On the University of Virginia website, “About Us Fraternity and Sorority Life”, describes how leadership qualities are promoted and acted on by diverse service experiences. As a student at either university, greek life would provide me with the social scene I’m looking for and create me into a well rounded
The movie Neighbors (2014) is about a family, Mac, Kelly and their new born daughter, who are settling into a quiet neighborhood until a fraternity moves into the house next door. The fraternity keeps the couple up at night because they are being to loud which ultimately leads to a ‘war’ between the couple and the fraternity. Each of the main characters are trying to prove that they have more power and establish their male dominance over one another. This paper will highlight the masculinities and place emphasis on the main male characters in this movie, the father, Mac, and the fraternity president, Teddy.

Social class, as defined by the film, is something that affects who you are as a person. In the film, the people saw class as the defining factor of a person. They saw class as a barrier between people. If one person is in a different class than another person, then obviously, they are not supposed to associate. They allowed their social class to dictate their action each day. It was amazing to me just how much the people in the film allowed their class to truly define them and really serve as a boundary in their life. The people in the film lived their daily life with their social class as the most influential factor. Their worth and value as individuals was not determined by anything else except the amount of money they had. It was really interesting to see how the amount of money a person had somehow equated with their worth in society. The same is true within our society today, but in the film, this aspect was especially evident. The film really shed a light on just how impactful social class is and just how much we allow it to
Over the years these amazing groups of men, also known as fraternities, have been given a bad name due to actions of a few individuals. This has led people to begin rumors and take on a poor perspective on Fraternities in multiple aspects. People see Fraternities as murders and menaces to society when they are much more than that. Fraternities are known for their helpfulness being dedicated to the community and the school. Always finding a way to give back and change the reputation they are known for. With so many different Organizations and chapters the possibilities are endless.
