Concussion Exposes and Educates Us about the NFL

The movie Concussion, directed by Peter Landesman is a sports biography and drama. Concussion is a highly educational movie, and it had a tremendous impact on the NFL as an organization towards the provision of improved helmets and safety measures to protect the football players’ heads. This movie, based on real life, stars Will Smith, who plays the role of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist who is a Nigerian immigrant in the US. Dr. Bennet Omalu worked at the Pittsburg coroner’s office; as an immigrant Nigerian with limited exposure to the game, he did not have any idea about football, until he performed an autopsy on a football star called Iron Mike Webster, who played the center for his team, the Pittsburg …show more content…

Dr. Omalu usually talks to his patients’ body before he begins the autopsy, and this annoys his coworker. Dr. Omalu believes that his patients have a story and only they can assist him solve their case. Dr. Omalu was curious and his curiosity towards the death of late football start Mike Webster a football star, who was homeless and had lost his mental balance and died at the age of 50 without a cause, This leads him to use his personal finances to purchase the equipment for Mike Webster’s autopsy. Dr. Omalu later discovered the relationship between repeated concussions and the resultant damage to American football players’ brains. He termed this disorder as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a neurodegenerative disease found in people who have suffered multiple head injuries. It is most common in those who participate in contact sports on a regular basis. Dr. Bennett Omalu discovers signs of early Alzheimer’s and dementia in many footballers, due to the repeated blows received from football injuries and frequent concussions to the brain.
