Comparison of Sitcoms
All 3 of my sitcoms I have chosen are great British, hugely popular
and critically praised. All of them were written by there own single
writer unlike in America where they had a team of writers to produce a
single sitcom. The 3 sitcoms I have picked are Only Fools and Horses,
Fawlty Towers and Porridge.
Only Fools and Horses was first shown on the BBC in 1981 and started
with a total of 3 main charters and 5 regular sub-characters. The 3
main characters they started out with were Del, Rodney and Granddad
Trotter. Only fools and horses have 7 or 8 series in all with quite a
few special feature length episodes like the one where they go to
France.
Fawlty Towers was first shown on the BBC in 1975 and started with the
3 main characters Basil Fawlty, Sibal Fawlty and of course the punch
bag from Barcelona in Spain Manuel. There were countless episodes but
fortunately no film so no one had there sides split open with
laughter. It had comedy arising from a consistent situation.
Porridge was a Sitcom first showed on the BBC in 1974 and based in
"Her Majesty Slade Prison" with the main and unforgettable "Norman
Stanley Fletcher" and his young cell mate "Godber". It was a huge
success because it had its own language of insults like "Nurk" because
it was on at prime time so it could not swear, giving it a prison
feel.
Only Fools and Horses some of the sets are the council flat where Del,
Rodney and granddad live called Nelson Mandela Towers in Peckham,
London, Mike's pub called the Nag's head it's a sort of pub for the
working class people, the local market area, Boycie's car dealership

...he canned laughter they use in Only Fools and Horses I think helps
you to realize that there was a joke or something funny a minute ago
and it helps you to laugh because generally when you hear someone else
laugh it makes you want tot laugh. But some people find that it
intimidates them because if they didn't understand the joke then they
think they are dumb and start thinking that the people are laughing at
them.
The type of people Only Fools and Horses is aimed at is the people who
like a bit of a laugh and the age range is really anyone who wants to
watch it because I find it funny and it's not to out dated in fact I
don't think it's out dated at all, think if you want a laugh then you
should watch it. Only Fools and Horses appeals to many people because
of Del and Rodney's underdog status that you feel sorry for.
There are many similarities and differences between the story “The Most Dangerous Game” and the episode of Gilligan's Island that we watched. Some similarities include: someone is being hunted, the setting is similar, and both victims get away in the end. Some differences include: the moods of the stories, the strategies that are used by the huntees, and how the hunter got to the island.
The Andy Griffith Show and I love Lucy have been two of the most watched shows in the history of television aired on CBS. I Love Lucy was a scripted sitcom recorded in front of a live studio audience with multiple cameras to give it better comic energy. It took place in an apartment in New York and her husband was an upcoming Cuban American who sung in a band. Although this was a black and white film, Lucy and Ricardo had colorful personalities. Lucy was always dressed nicely and Ricardo was always in a suit or business like attire. The house was always spotless as she was a housewife and an excellent mother later on. Lucy had a way of getting into trouble but Ricky somehow managed to get them out. She also displayed some traits that women were stereotyped for such as not showing or looking your age, being careless with money, and other secretive things. Ricardo on the other hand was the total opposite of Lucy which in the end balanced out their relationship. He has more patience than most and when he gets extremely mad, he would speak reall...
Different Strokes a comedy sitcom, first aired in 1978, and lasted until 1986. This sitcom consisted of a widowed Manhattan millionaire, Phillip Drummond , who adopted two orphaned brothers. Arnold who was 8 years old and Willis who was 12. The boys' mother was Drummonds housekeeper who became very ill, so Drummond made a promise to her that he would take care of her two sons after she passed away. Drummond treated the two boys like his own. He also lived with his daughter, Kimberly, who was 13 years old, and his current housekeeper. This sitcom showed typical life lessons in growing up, and social problems that were occurring during that time. Some of the aspects of this show were both positive and negative.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2007) women’s labor force participation raised from 33.9% in 1950 to 57.5% in 1990. The TV shows Married with Children and Roseanne are similar and different in the way they portray that statistic through their gender roles. Married with Children shows the more traditional type of gender roles, while Roseanne shows gender roles that were not as common in past decades. Both shows exemplify gender roles that were common and rare compared to decades prior. The TV shows, Married with Children and Roseanne are similar and different because of the gender roles each television show displays.
This essay will examine my thoughts and those of David Sterrit on the critically acclaimed television show The Honeymooners. First, I will talk about the Honeymooners and it’s setting in postwar America. Secondly, the social and cultural issues the series portrayed. Next, would be the psychological perspective and the aesthetics of the show. Finally, the essay would conclude with my thoughts on how the Honeymooners were impacted by these aspects, but also how the show managed to leave a legacy in television today.
That 70’s show was probably one of the funniest television shows that have aired throughout the late 90’s to early 2000’s. The show no longer air new episodes however, old episodes are occasionally aired on ABC family and sometimes MTV. The cast did a great job basing the show on life in the 70’s even though it was really produced in the 90’s to early 2000’s. The characters from the show are still making headlines today for example Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are reportedly engaged and actress Lisa Robin Kelly past away due to multiple drug intoxication. It would’ve been awesome if the show comes back even if they change it to live in the 80’s or 90’s.
The Impact of African-American Sitcoms on America's Culture Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African-Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson’s in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded.
Television is the pinnacle of human creation. A box the size of an animal that could produce pictures that move and was created thousands of miles away in a studio by other humans whose job it was to entertain the public, but does the need to entertain remove from the possible knowledge to attain. Shows like Family Guy, Futurama, and South Park are some of the many shows that people decree as pointless, a joke, a waste of time, or idiotic. To the unknowing eye theses shows are indeed nothing more than a joke or entertain, but if one were to take a closer look into the shows it is possible to see that jokes, storylines, and characters represent a bigger picture. Family Guy, Futurama, and South Park are some of those shows that use satire to

For a large part of the history of TV sitcoms women have been portrayed as mothers or as having to fulfill the woman's role in the private sphere. Family based sitcoms were one of the forms of sitcom that keep women in these roles, but what is interesting is that even in other forms of sitcoms women do not truly escape these roles. Sitcoms, like Sex and the City and Murphy Brown showcase women whom have seemingly escaped these roles, by showing liberated women, but that does not mean that both do not fall into the gender role showcased in family sitcoms. It draws the similarities between ensemble sitcoms and family sitcoms when it comes down to the role of women. The starring women in both Sex and the City and Murphy Brown, and even the Mary
In closing, Mary Tyler Moore is still a great show to see. It is a great way to get away from the sex, violence, and taboo in media today. It may not be as funny as it used to be, but it’s just as revolutionary, and just as entertaining, but in a different way: as history.
When Friends first aired in 1994, five years into the original run of Seinfeld, it was criticized as being a “knock-off Seinfeld.” Although there were significant similarities between the two shows, there were also vast differences. Seinfeld and Friends were targeted to two very different audiences, and they represented the relatively new idea of “friendship comedies” in different ways.
In fact, English speakers in America clearly differ from those in Britain by tone, delivery, and expression. Since the language differs in these ways based on its local use, it is understandable why the two countries’s humor differ as well. America’s obvious slap-stick and Britain’s blunt irony, differ between their own individual standards, just like their versions of the English language, and continue to change with time. In comparison to the humor used by Hollywood’s original actors in the early fifties, the comedies we are currently exposed to on television today has changed drastically.
The person receiving the joke should try to be understanding and not get uptight. Be aware that the person that is playing the joke is more likely trying to get a smile out of that individual and most likely not attempting to upset them. Humor is a wonderful way to get attention when an individual is bored. Why would a person do such a thing? A person purpose for this is simply to free themselves of their boredom. Also when and where is humor appropriate, for a person to crack a joke? When our brain is bored, we choose an appropriate person to play some harmless jokes on. We choose this since we are confident the person will react ok. There are great memories we can share with others through humor. My most memorable experience was when my brother had called me on the phone. It was a Sunday evening at home on I was sitting at my dining room table. I was chosen as my
Before analyzing the comedic content in question, it is important when drawing on a variety of sentiments from comedians to understand that many performers use a character or parody for their humor. Others choose to voice opinions and views contrary to their own, in the hopes of receiving a certain reaction from a specific audience. In referring to the material of writers and comedians, one must respond to the beliefs they promote (which can be known), rather than those they espouse, which cannot.
