All religions differ in one way or another, but one of the biggest distinguishers for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is our core belief in the Godhead. This core belief, while not included in the Genesis account of the Creation, can be seen in Moses 2:1: “I am the Beginning and the End, the Almighty God; by mine Only Begotten I created these things; yea, in the beginning I created the heaven, and the earth…” Immediately we can see that Heavenly Father referred to His Son as the creator of the heaven and the earth, and it was only under the direction of the Father that it occurred. This knowledge of Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father as two separate beings brings a greater understanding of what they have done for us. Jesus taught the apostles that He could only do as He’d seen His Father do (John 5:19). As Heavenly Father’s children, this scripture teaches us so much about our Father’s identity! Heavenly Father may have once done just as Jesus Christ did for us—He atoned. He understood perfectly Christ’s struggles in the Garden of Gethsemane, and He also experienced the Creation process for Himself. He lived on an earth like we do now. Not only am I permanently linked into my family’s tree, but I am also capable of becoming like God. I was created in His image from the beginning, and now I am able to overcome sin and death because of the Savior, and one day become a goddess!
