The differences between the classes, and most importantly the Handmaids and Wives are clearly shown in the text. Accordingly, different classes end up having different colours for essentially everything that they wear or use. Furthermore, Offred is making her way throughout the house when she stumbles upon a stand that is filled with hats and umbrellas in which she observes, “There a several umbrellas in it: black, for the Commander, blue, for the Commander’s Wife, and the one assigned to me, which is red” (Atwood 9). Women are seated in different places based on their status and class, exemplifying the clear social divisions. It’s most clearly shown with the Wives and the Handmaids. The Wives end up getting chairs to sit in because their from the higher class, while the lower class, the Handmaids are treated very poorly in which they have to kneel on a cushion that is on the floor. This shows the revelation of Gilead’s society and how the upper class are respected more and get more luxury in a way, compared to the Handmaids who are treated like they’re just animals and expected to sit on the ground, due to their lower social
