All authors have their own way of portraying their tone in an essay which is the author’s attitude toward the writing and the readers. Many poems show an angry and pessimistic tone in their writing which gives the reader an idea of what the poem is about. The way an author conveys a piece of writing also tells the reader how the author is feeling. Writers also portray imagery which is when an author uses figurative language to represent objects. Imagery correlates with who the speaker is and what message it is they want sent to the reader about who they are. The poems “Spring and All” by William Carlos Williams, “My Father as a Guitar” by Martin Espada, and “Negro by Langston Hughes” are all written by different authors who each have their own view but still manage to have their similarities and differences with imagery, tone, and a speaker being involved. All three poems will be compared and contrasted to give each poem a new outlook. “Spring and All” is a poem by William Carlos Williams that has a vivid sense of imagery. In the case of “Spring and All”, “Negro”, and “My Father as a Guitar”, the poet just so happens to be the speaker. In each of these poems the speaker is able to identify themselves in each situation they are in. For example, in “Negro” by Langston Hughes, the speaker identifies himself as a “Negro which makes the title of the poem important to whom the speaker is. In “Spring and All” the speaker is the center of the poem because he is the one who is foreseeing the landscape that he wants the readers to see. He becomes the guide to the poem as he changes what he looks at and his emotion toward it.
