The two poems that are in comparison is “Legacies” by Nikki Giovanni and “Thank You Ma’m” by Langston Hughes. Both of the poems use different craft moves and techniques to describe the craft of the writing. The author craft moves just states the message and theme to get across the story. The author craft moves that is used is Tone, Symbolism, And a little Inner Thinking in “Thank You Ma’m”. In both the short story and the poem, the universality of the idea is comparing the book and the poem by using different writer techniques and author's craft throughout the story. In both texts you can see that both stories include same craft moves, and tells that they show empathy. Also, Langston Hughes also used a little bit of Reader Knows More Than The Character because he describes the boy and gives a guessed age to the small teenager. On page 143 in the workbook, it says “He looked as if he were fourteen and fifteen, frail and willow-wild, in tennis shoes and blue jeans”; giving the boys guessing age as said and small characteristics. His reason for giving the characters description is because he wants to Get Readers Predicting and also Build Suspense.As you read throughout the both stories, both of the authors raises the stakes by showing the importance of the topic and characters. The context of “Thank You Ma’m” is how a child attempted to steal a lady's purse because he had no family to depend on but throughout the passage, they start showing a little trust path towards each other that made them closer than when they first met. In “Legacies”, the grandmother wants to teach her granddaughter how to make rolls; but the granddaughter is not very interested because she knew when her grandmother passes away, she would regret that and be less independent, but the grandmother becomes pretty distress. At the end, then she explains how the kids today are different from how she expected. The poem uses 1st Person Narrator and Inner Thinking as techniques. In “Thank You Ma’m”, when they say that his teeth rattled; that is a metaphor because they make a comparison between two things.
