Death is a highly impactful event in any person’s life usually it has a negative result in their relationships and well-being. Death is present in the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower and in the movie The Other Side of the Door which greatly impacts the main character’s lives. The guilt of the death of Charlies Aunt Helen and the death of Marias son Oliver affects their state of mind negatively because they refuse to deal with it. The death of the close family member also influences their ability to have positive relationships with their families because they Maria blames her husband for not being closer to the family and Charlie blames himself and can’t develop a close relationship with his family because of what he suppresses. Eventually both characters have to face the truth and Charlie ends up in a mental hospital while Maria ends up dying herself. …show more content…

The guilt of not dealing with the death of his Aunt Helen helps him suppress his memories of her molesting him, and he goes mentally ill from doing so. The guilt of not dealing with the death of her son Oliver leads her to suicide, by overdosing but she survives and in the hospital her house maid tells her of an ancient temple where she can say goodbye to her son but from the other side of the door and she was warned not to open it so with the guilt that she carries she opens the door and releases an evil spirit of her son Oliver. The two connect because Charlie goes mentally ill, and Maria when her son first comes back she thinks she is going crazy. Their relationships change as a result of the death in their family in ways
