In reference to the readings by Owen and O’Brein in “Voices From The Inside”. One can see that both stories showcase fear of the unknown and this is why I believe that Mental Illness as a whole elicits such a stigma within our society. To go more in depth on why I believe this is first in “ To Tell or Not to Tell” by Carol L. Owen, she talks about the stigma that someone may feel when opening up to an employer about the mental illness they are suffering from, how some have the fear of being viewed as less because of the mental illness they may be suffering from, for example, some of the participants felt as if they were being treated with “kid gloves” following the disclosure of their mental illness.
