Comparing Martin Luther King and Malcolm X

Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are to diverse individuals with two

opposite personalities but both successfully succeeded in achieving

freedom and bringing equality to black Americans discriminated against

for many years even after the abolishment of slavery.

Martin Luther King was born in 1929, in Georgia, Atlanta. Unlike the

other black people in the southern states he was different he grew up

in well off family who was freely educated a key factor in his

personal achievements. During his younger adult years just like his

father who was a preacher King decided to work in the Christian church

as a Baptist Minster. He idolised Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who led

India’s campaign for independence from Britain. He admired the way

Gandhi saw every individual equally and his ideas of non-violent

protest. As fear leads to hate and hate leads to suffering this was

the case with the black Americans. He had a vision for the black

people he dreamt of white and blacks being able to get along as one

with no violence he had the strong belief that blacks would one day be

free; he expressed this vision in the famous speech at Washington D.C

in the company of ½ million desegregationist “I have a Dream”. It was

here and this march that the Civil Rights Act 1964, which stated that

it was now illegal to discriminate against colour was put in order.

That something that was burning inside Martin Luther King was

expressed through his non-violent actions which helped Black

Americans. These actions were in the forms of marching campaigns. He

became a well known leader of black civil rights protest after the

ghettos.

Despite there difference in character and methods of leading both

Malcolm X and King agreed on some issues as the reason for their

protest. The U.S government is not treating the black unfairly, as the

law is racist. And the main reason behind their protests that the

black Americans are being tortured everyday by whites.

I believe that only we remained equipoise in praises and persecutions

that will be able to fulfil our objectives. So if I had to follow

either of these leaders in their protest it would be Martin Luther

King. The reason being he had a realistic objective and the strong

belief and determination to fulfil that. I personally do not believe

in violence as it is never the answer to resolve a situation.
