To understand whether the Greeks or the Romans made the most meaningful contributions to western culture, one must compare the contributions from each civilization. Meaningful contributions, in this paper, refers to contributions with a lasting positive impact. Contributions can be divided into major themes these being religion, government, science, military, humanities and art. Religion is a foundation pillar of society with the power to shake every aspect of a civilizations lifestyle. The Greeks introduced the Pantheons. The Pantheons were twelve different deities that each controlled a different sector of life and were led by the god Zeus. These deities had temples and monuments built in their honer and dedicated priest and priestess. Citizens respected and worshiped the Pantheons and integrated their images into statues and art. One emperor with a prominent involvement in religion was Constantine. Constantine embraced the religion of Christianity and was the first emperor to except monotheism. Theodosis, Constantine's successor, took his beliefs a step further by banning all religions besides Christianity. Religion was integrated into one with the government and became a powerful force in politics. To sum up the contributions of Rome, related to religion, the Romans introduced Christianity, national religion, and theocracy. Government creates order and peace within civilizations. Both the Greeks and Romans contributed to western government today but in very different way. The Greeks practiced direct democracy. This approach allowed for a justis and encouraged a attitude of civic involvement. The Greeks also contributed a system of check and balance to prevent any one power from gaining too much power.
