Goffman argues that our sense of identity (who we believe ourselves to be) is also constructed socially through how we present ourselves to others.

He also proposed a model of self and identity where he descrubes lifee as a series of dramatic episodes where we play the actors. We write our own lines which shows our personal identity. We also follow the lines given to us whcih showcase the external influences that tell us how to behave in certain situations and roles. This is seen with the social norms that define "masculinity" and "femininity" whcih define how we are expected to behave based solely on gender.
