In the epic poem, Beowulf; there were many monsters that Beowulf had to fight off. But, there was three main monsters throughout the epic poem. These monsters consisted of Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the Dragon. Each of these monsters have their own unique characteristics and way of life. Such as, the way the poet made them out to look like and the places they called home. These are the key factors that we want to analyze, to find out why the poet created them that way and what the poet was aiming for when he thought of these unique characteristics. Grendel was the very first monster that Beowulf had to face. The poet makes Grendel out to be a human, but also incorporated animal like features into Grendel’s appearance. By doing this, the poet made Grendel look very fierce, strong, and frightening. In which scared all the people of Dane into banishing him from the kingdom forever. Grendel then finds a home in the marshes, where water flows down into an underground cave. With trees, that have twisting roots to block the sunlight, which surrounds the cave. She was also known as the creature of the deep. The poet also made Grendel’s mother out to be a human, but incorporated many animal like features. She only attacked the kingdom of Dane because Beowulf killed her only son and wanted revenge. This shows her characteristics, some being that of almost evil, but mostly remorse for her dead son, revenge seeking, and to punish that person who did all the damage to her lovely son. She too lived under the water, where no man ever goes, surrounded by other monsters that she had ruled over for more than half a hundred years. All of this showed that she was fine with the fact that she was a monster leading all of the sea monsters. Beowulf couldn’t stand monsters or evil, so he saw her the same way that he saw her son.
