In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, characters Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell both carry the title 'father', however throughout the novel they represent the meaning of the word in very different ways. Their differences show throughout this novel, it showed through their parental instincts. Addition to parental instincts, you saw how the traits of selflessness and selfishness come to the surface, and how they express themselves once the time arises. Lastly is education, education is displayed by their respect for school and respect to educate their children. But when it comes to having a happy family not both Atticus and Bob had a fun and loving home. Atticus always did his best to make sure his children understand and appreciate everything the world offers them. Atticus wanted his children to understand what he did and why he did it. He wanted Scout and Jem to grow up learning as much as they could, and would do anything to protect them. For instance ways Atticus showed his love is by making a deal with Scout. After Scout was told by her teacher that she didn't want Atticus to read to her anymore because he isn't a teacher. Scout refused to go back to school. Atticus said to her if she went to everyday, he would read with her every night, in secret. Atticus showed Scout and Jem the reality of racism in court, and how racism is everywhere. Atticus was a man who consistently put others needs in front of his own, even if it meant harming himself in the process. For instance when Miss Maudie's house caught fire, Atticus first made sure his children were safe. Then ran into the house trying to save as much as he could. Atticus knew Miss Maudie would be devastated, and did everything he could to make her feel better. Another situation where Atticus put others in front of himself is in the case of Tom Robinson. Once Tom was taken to the Maycomb County Jail. Atticus say outside Tom's cell all night, even when an angry mob of men appeared looking for revenge on Tom. Atticus wouldn't let anyone past no matter how many threats came his way, or how many weapons they carried. Selfishness is defined as being concerned, sometimes excessively or exclusively, for oneself or one's own advantage, pleasure, or welfare, regardless or others. This is also the definition of Bob Ewell. Bob gave no concern to others, or his own family. He gave all of his duties of caring for others to his daughter and only cared if he ate that day, or if he had somewhere to sleep that night.
