Compare And Contrast Beowulf And Gilgamesh

Even though centuries separate the two epic tales of Beowulf and Gilgamesh, they still share some extreme similarities, and also suffer some differences. When looking at both epic heroes it is evident that they both has similarities and differences, just as the epics do as a whole. These similarities and differences include but are not limited to the epic heroes journeys, fighting skills, and lastly their leadership styles.

The first area that will be compared and contrasted is the epic heroes journeys. Both Gilgamesh and Beowulf had very different journeys throughout the stories. When comparing the journeys we see that both epic heroes went on their journeys for personal reasons. Although the personal reasons are different, it still is for a personal reason. Gilgamesh and Beowulf both had avid followers behind them while on their journey, they were never alone. Lastly, while looking at comparison both heroes’ journeys resulted in personal satisfaction, as both went on the journey for personal reasoning to begin with. Both Beowulf and Gilgamesh are great and heroic leaders as they share some factors, but also hold their own differences. The similarities of the leadership styles are very simple and easy to recognize. The similarities shared are that both heroes are boastful, confident, both have the desire to be well known. Lastly, as stated previously they both have loyal followers, but it is due to the strong leadership provided. The differences in the leadership styles are easily more extensive. Beowulf was loved by everyone whereas Gilgamesh struggles to be well liked by more than just his followers. Also, Beowulf was true to his people and did not use them, while Gilgamesh on the other hand used his people-- especially women.
