There are many versions of “A Christmas Carol”, play versions, book versions, and even movie versions. All versions have a different sort of “style” to them, or they are performed in a different kind of way. The movie version that was created in 2009 starring Jim Carrey and the original version created by Charles Dickens are two very different, but similar versions. The movie version that was created in 2009 is performed in a creepy way. There is a blizzard and the spirits all are big and not exactly how they are described in the book. In the book, Ebenezer Scrooge ends up back at his place by the spirit of christmas future shrinking down and dwindling into a bedpost, in the movie that is different. Despite the movie and the books differences they are very alike in some ways. In the movie and the book, Ebenezer Scrooge and the spirits review the same things. By review, I mean that Scrooge and the spirits go through the same things. They review his past, his present and his future. With the spirit of the past it shows him everything that has happened in his past such as him going to school and the love of his life dying, the movie and the book both show that. With the present the movie and the book both show how a man that works for him is poor and that his son is going to die if Scrooge’s behavior doesn’t change. On Christmas Eve , Scrooge is gone by a progression of ghosts,starting with his old business accomplice, Jacob Marley. The three spirits follow,the Ghosts of Past , Christmas present and Christmas future ,show how his ,mean conduct has influenced everyone around him. Toward the finish of the story ,he is soothed to find that there is still time for him to change and we see him changed into a liberal and kind hearted person.
Just like the play, Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character in the story. He is a mean, cold-hearted man that has no Christmas spirit whatsoever. All that Scrooge cares about and will ever care about is his wealth until he is taken on a journey. He is lead by 3 ghosts of his past, present, and future as he was in the play. These ghosts show him what Christmas spirit is and try to force it upon him. All of this finally hits him once he is taken to the future and witnesses his own grave. Scrooge pleads for a second chance to change his bad ways. Once he wakes up in his bedroom after all of this craziness, he jumps for joy and makes many new friends while mending with some old friends. Little did Ebenezer Scrooge know, this was going to be the kickoff to a substantial journey on his night of Christmas Eve. The ghost of Christmas past had the appearance similar to a child, yet it had some characteristics comparable to a lit candle. This ghost took Scrooge to all of his most painful memories leading up to his present day position. After brief reminders of these incidents, Scrooge started to get melancholy. Events from his schooldays, his engagement, and even his happy apprenticeship with his former boss Fezziwig provided enough insight for the main character to visit his childhood. Scrooge then got an unexpected visit from the ghost of Christmas Present. He took the display of a gigantic man, dressed in a green robe. This ghost helped provide an insight for Scrooge on what his acquaintances were doing on Christmas Eve night. Bob Cratchit, had a dinner with his family and could barely afford any food due to his low wage from Scrooge. Lastly, Ebenezer received a visitation from the ghost of Christmas yet to come. The ghost was strictly straightforward with Scrooge’s future if he kept acting similar to what he did. The play “A Christmas Carol – A ghost story of Christmas” by Charles Dickson, directed by James Black in Houston, TX was performed in a similar way in “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickson, directed by Michael Wilson in Washington, D.C. The both plays had similarities and differences throughout the play in which demonstrated different creativity from the different directors. The rating that was given by the reviewer of the play in Washington gave a 5 out of 5 star rating. For the play that I went to watch the rating I would give it would be a 5 star rating.
In the beginning, some might say that the ghost of Jacob Marley is what caused the change. Well it couldn’t have been Jacob Marley because when Jacob first visits Scrooge and tells him that three ghosts will come to haunt him Scrooge has no change and just says “ I think I’d rather not,”. This shows that he didn’t change because if he had changed than he would he would have said something like, “ Oh, Marley, my old friend I’m so glad you came to see me. Even if you’re a ghost, I’m still delighted to have you here. Merry Christmas Jacob, Merry Christmas.” Jacob visiting Scrooge didn’t make any difference at all.

Because of his old partner Jacob Marley, (who died) Ebenezer has three ghosts of Christmas come to help him remember his Christmas Spirit. When they let him see his past, present, and future, it changes his whole life. The movie, and drama had many similarities, and differences.
Charles Dickens creates a world in A Christmas Carol where Christmas is simply magical. The scenes that Dickens describes capture the exact spirit of Christmas, making every reader both young and old relate. Dickens portrays a few of the Christmas traditions in A Christmas Carol that were typical during the Victorian Era, but definitely not all. Christmas during this time period was just beginning to become popular and widely celebrated. People were beginning to decorate their homes for the holiday in reverence of Jesus Christ as well as a sign of new life. Friends and family would send and exchange Christmas cards that featured unique artwork and designs. The legend of Santa Claus was just beginning to circulate throughout Europe. The food that was served for Christmas dinner was also a very important aspect of the holiday season.
In Conclusion, in the 1st Stave Dickens presents Scrooge as an evil, aged, prosperous man. As you read the Staves 2, 3 and 4, Scrooge’s behaviour, thoughts and attitude changes gradually. In Stave 2 a quote to show how shrude Scrooge is 'All he could make out was that it was still very foggy and extremely cold' this shows that Scrooge is an unpleasant ‘a covetous sinner’. This has an effect upon the reader as it shows how the cold weather can hurt and be distasteful to people just like Scrooge. Scrooge is described as the weather as he is like it; he hurts the people around him. Finally, in the 4th Stave he changes and he admits it, here is a quote “Spirit!'' he cried, tight clutching at its robe, “hear me! I am not the man I was.” This shows Scrooge is pleading that he has changed. I think he has transformed because of the experience he had by the four spirits.
Throughout A Christmas Carol and The Divine Comedy, the similarities consist of Christian holidays, the use of threes, and the repercussions of greed. Along with the similarities, there are also several differences such as the point of view of each story, where the characters travel, and the ghost that come to Scrooge and Dante.

How do we know when or how to change ourselves as people? Sometimes, we all need a shove from something or someone to help us better ourselves. The most dominant factors are kindness, fear, and regret. These three things can make us willing to go through the hassle and hard work of breaking out of a habit, whether it be putting your feet on the couch, or your attitude.
One similarity is that in both of the stories have three ghost that visit the main character and transport them by touch. In the book, three ghosts come to Scrooge to show him his past, present, and future in hopes of changing his perspective. They teleported him to the times by Scrooge touching the them. In the movie, the main character, Cindy, is startled by three ghosts also looking to change her view on Christmas by showing her the past, present, and future. The description of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is a tall, stately figure that is shrouded in a black garment that covers its face and the rest of its body. This figure was hard to discern from the night. Also, the Spirit neither spoke or moved. When the ghost showed Scrooge the vision of someone’s death and all their possessions being stolen by some very immoral people, Scrooge is in denial and thinks that that could never be him. But, he finally comes to the realization that it is him. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’s description describes Scrooge’s dark future if he does not change his attitude.
