Coming of age novels are very inspirational for young readers to teach them how to grow up and become a successful person in our society. Two coming of age novels that show independent strong characters are the novels The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. The main characters in both these novels, Katniss and Karana, show that they independent, courageous, true to who they are, and stand up for what they believe in. In both stories the protagonists risk everything to protect their younger siblings. Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim’s place in the games and Karana jumps off the ship to stay with her brother when she found out he was left alone on the island. Both of these acts were very courageous and performed without any guidance from other characters.
