Directions for Paper #1: Give a minimum of 8 sentence answer for each of the following questions. How have you been personally affected by colonization and how can you begin to decolonize your mind? Growing up, I lived in a small town named Amery. The population was very polarized. With 2,839 people in our small farm town, there was nearly no diversity. Many of the people in this town were direct descendants of Irish, Norwegian, and German ancestors who came to farm in this area many years ago. To go along with this, there was always a distaste towards native people growing up. The people in Amery were massive hunters, and having natives in the area seemed to anger the white population because they had a set of different laws that applied to them. Many racial slurs were said to diminish the authority of natives in the area. And in turtle lake, a town near to mine, there was a casino. I never needed to have that conversation growing up. I never really saw in color. Many people in my family have a darker complexion. I’m a complete mutt with close relatives from Puerto Rico to Manitoba, from France to the area of Bohemia. However, I am still privileged. I appear white, and grew up in a 99% white population. My parents never needed to educate me or my siblings about racism for our own physical protection. I have also never been asked to speak for all the people of my racial group. This is because if I were to speak for my racial group, id end up speaking for half the planet. I’ve always had a hard time visualizing myself as a part of an individual race. I believe it to be polarizing. There are people out there still who actively racially profile. I’ve never had the experience of being profiled or, as an example, followed at stores and not been harassed by anyone as to what I am
