One major topic of controversy in today’s society is whether or not the NCAA should allow college athletes to get paid. As of right now, the closest thing to payment athletes can receive for playing sports is an athletic scholarship. Although some people believe that an athletic scholarship is enough compensation for college athletes, the NCAA should start allowing colleges to pay athletes for playing sports at their school because it would help control the salaries of college coaches, athletics are a major source of revenue for schools, and it could help keep athletes on the right track. In the O’Bannon v. N.C.A.A. court case, Ed O’Bannon sued the NCAA for using his name on television and in video games. A three-judge appeals panel upheld the federal judges ruling that the NCAA was not violating any laws by using O’Bannon’s name. Judge Claudia Wilkens, one of the judges on the appeals panel, suggested that players could receive a scholarship covering the full cost of attendance, as well as, a trust fund capped at $5,000 per year that could be accessed after the completion of college. For starters, are colleges exploiting the labor of college athletes in order to generate revenue? Coaches of the major revenue generating sports (football and men’s basketball) have the potential to sign multi-million dollar contracts, schools are making insane amounts of money off ticket sales, television contracts, etc., but athletes are receiving, at most, a free education, that of which the standards are lowered so that athletes can continue to play and win games. Another ethical issue comes to surface when you think about the health risks to the athletes. Are the schools doing enough to ensure the safety of the players? At least, if the players were paid and then got injured, they have something to fall back
