Inman, Purely Evil or Purely good? His role in “Cold Mountain” as an ambiguous character would identify him as purely good. Inman is a veteran of the war. He has psychological problems, as well as physical aggressiveness. The novel opens with Inman being wounded, giving the audience evidence that Inman has participated in a war. Throughout the novel Inman has nightmares about the deaths he has witnessed, and the scares of war. Inman, is also in love with a girl named Ada, whom he barely knows but is deeply in love with her.
