In 1978, August moved to Minnesota after careful consideration from his friend Claude Purdy, who lived there. He secured a job writing educational scripts for the 'Science Museum of Minnesota. He quit his museum job in 1981 after a year before being offered a fellowship for ‘The Playwrights Centre’ which was located in Minneapolis. For another three years, Wilson worked as a part-time cook at the ‘Little Brothers of The Poor’. He had a long-term relationship with the ‘Penumbra Theatre Company’ of St. Paul, they even premiered some of his future plays.
