You never should be labeled,no one likes to or wants to be labeled. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy finds out what labels really mean to others. As well as how they should mean. Ponyboy figures out that he has a label and so do others. He knows those labels shouldn’t be there for anyone not even him. A Soc isn’t a “Soc” a Greaser isn’t a “Greaser” there all just normal people, with the same or different characteristics.

Ponyboy meets three different Socs throughout the story and realizes that their label is not what it really means. Ponyboy figures out that Cherry Valance and Marcia Socs, or at least that is what their label is,is actually not a Socs their completely different people. Before Ponyboy met the two girls he thought they were just like other Socs girls. The type of girls who were obnoxious,rude,snobby and especially towards the people who didn’t have money like they did, mostly the Greasers. Randy brings Ponyboy over to his car and asks him to just chat with him for a few seconds.Randy asked Ponyboy why he saved those children and that he would never do that but he would also never expect a greaser to save the kids too.Ponyboy then explained to him that it wasn’t a Greaser or Soc issue it was the decision was on the dependent individual. Randy then told Ponyboy he didn’t and wasn’t going to fight in the rumble that night it wouldn’t solve anything,and no one would really win. As Ponyboy gets out of the car Randy says “Thanks Greaser” pauses and then says “Look I didn't mean that,I meant,thanks kid.” Ponyboy then replies with “My name's Ponyboy...nice talkin’ to you Randy”. Ponyboy realized that , "Socs are just guys after all. Things are rough all over, but it was better that way. That way you could tell the other guy was human too."
