Social Mobility and Stratification: The Effects of Education on Class, Culture, and Occupation Education can be a means of rising within the ranks of social mobility, regardless of your social standing. However, the stratification of social classes and divisions among the classes, in terms of their financial status, are affected by whether or not people have a way of receiving a good education and if they can thrive in their academics. Education is associated with social status, cultural resources, and occupations, and a lack of education will negatively affect its associations. Parents that can afford to put their children in good schools often play a role in their education as well, but many low-income parents struggle to do so. One of the students from Avenues speaks of how he notices a “disparity just between looking at kids across the street at Avenues and then looking at the housing project” and how “this gap is just becoming larger between the two.” It is evident that there is a wealth gap between the upper and lower class, and this gap will only increase as the middle class individuals continue to slowly decline and become members of the lower class. The issue of social inequality makes it difficult for individuals to rise in the ranks of social classes, ultimately making social mobility difficult regardless of what class you’re in. The cultural resources a person has obtained can heavily influence a child's academic success. Students who are taught cultural resources have less trouble being outgoing and interactive with others inside the school community. Being raised in such a way causes them to be less motivated to be involved in class and hesitant to go out of their way to positively interact with teachers and form relationships. Education is directly linked with income and occupation. If you're raised being taught a prestigious education, the likelihood of you getting a more reputable job increases, along with your income. This is correlated with social status and power. An Avenues student spoke of how he’s wanted to be a doctor ever since a young age, but he’s more interested in the service aspect of it than the financial aspect, saying “You ask kids my age what [they] want to be when [they] get older [they] want to make money. I just want to help people and where is that gonna set me off socio-economically and financially? I don't know.” Although this student is disregarding the income of doctors, nonetheless he is an educationally privileged individual who aspires to have a prestigious occupation. It would be much more difficult for an individual in the housing buildings to aspire and accomplish becoming a doctor due to the likelihood that they don’t have access to the same education.
