The trends correlating to the decrease in volunteerism between generations is of personal value relating to my desire to be a community leader and non-profit owner. Additionally, as an Americorps applicant, I found the lack of community project engagement versus individual volunteering of concern, since the foundation of the Americorps program is based on impact through group collaboration. In relation to group collaboration, Putin posed the lack of volunteer participation stemming from a decrease in establishing community connections. In addition to organizational involvement, Putin supports that education, age, work, community size, wealth, and family status influence civic engagement. Trends within the following demographics effect the frequency of volunteerism and philanthropy. Throughout recent years, Americans have given a vast amount of time and money to numerous organizations. Financial security has influenced the giving patterns of individuals at specific ages. Additionally, education and job security play a role in impacting the age in which individuals are most civically involved. The exposure of community involvement at a young age also positively influenced the focus on community involvement throughout life stages. Support for the following claim is indicated in deviations in the amount of money being given to religious entities. In regards to volunteerism, Putin noted “that “volunteering” is reported two to three times more frequently than “working on a community project” (128). Moreover, the composition of volunteers has changed, the young population use to be more involved in individual volunteerism, whereas now, seniors have begun to lead in regards to volunteering frequency. Putin mentions that the decrease in group volunteerism, has resulted in a smaller commitment of volunteers to their mode of service.
