The Great Depression was an area of time between 1929 and 1939 when the United States was in economic distress. Unemployment rates had reached up to 25%, people were starving, and well-paying, steady jobs were scarce. A film that depicts some of the effects of the Great Depression is Cinderella Man. This movie accurately displays the hardships of family life, role of government during this time, and the stress of finding work through the life of James Braddock. In Cinderella Man James Braddock, his wife, and two kids struggle to stay together, healthy and safe, throughout the depression. He suffered through working with a broken hand, he risked his own life fighting, and he even threw away all pride when he begged for relief in order to bring his kids home. Another aspect that was greatly displayed was the harsh environment of Hoovervilles. When they visit the Hooverville in search of Mike they find that he had been killed. While there they witness so much fighting, the dirty and unsteady condition of everything, and people treating everything and everyone without respect. The struggle of finding employment is represented through the scenes at the docks. There are so many men waiting at the gate hoping to be picked that day, but then only five or six men are chosen, and the rest are left without work for the day. Near everyone was struggling to find proper employment. James’s coach, who had previously been thriving with a nice home and plenty of money, was now struggling also. When Mrs. Braddock goes over to talk to him we are showed that his house is empty, he also had to sell everything to support his family. The government tried their best to supply relief to those who were hurting. When James needed money to pay his bills in order to keep his children they gave him the money he needed.
