For this project, two films were viewed. The first one is Annie, a film made in the early 80s about a girl in an orphanage. She is then brought to live in a mansion for a week with one of the richest men in this world. He doesn’t like her at first, but he learns to love the little girl, and adopt her. The second film, Cinderella man, is about a boxer who loses his job after he breaks his hand during a match. He is then left to fend for his family. He begins to slowly rise up as a boxer and fight again, much to his wife’s distaste. For this project, I will discuss the similarities and differences between the films, and the time period, setting, and characters. Annie is the first film. Annie is set smack in the middle of the depression in New The film starts out with Russel Crowe’s James Braddock (a role that is very different from that in L.A. Confidential), an Irish-American boxer working his way from a poverty-stricken home life to the heights of stardom by becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. At the beginning of the film, Braddock seen being given non-shomer support by his wife, Mae, in the presence of their young children at the dinner table. When one of the children asks for more food, Mae responds by saying “Sorry, we have to save some for the boys.” This simple yet melancholia response reveals the complex dynamic of a man who has acquired all the manpower he will ever need while simultaneously he is literally fighting to keep the heads of his family above water during the biggest financial decadence in American history. This is a story of an individual who beat the odds and achieved worldwide recognition for his relentless pursuit to overcome the everyday struggles of the Great Mrs. Hannigan was a heavy drinker, and therefore, she cared less about everything. In class, we learned about how many people were kicked out of their jobs because the jobs didn’t have enough money to pay them. Rather then help him, the boxing place kicked James out. We learned that many people had to fight their way back into getting jobs. They had to work 200 times harder, and that is exactly was James did. He pushed himself to get through
