Since the beginning of time, food has always been something that brought groups of people together. A place where families join to celebrate important mile stones of life or just simply reconnect for just a couple hours in midst of their hectic schedules. For me, family meals are a place of joy and laughter that I always look forward too when special holidays come around. There are certain dishes that always make the cut when planning the delicious menu. These things include: hamburger cookouts, delicious desserts, and my personal favorite, Christmas dinner. Every summer, we gather for multiple different holidays, but one thing that’s always in common are juicy hamburger patties sizzling on the grill at my grandfather’s house. With added ingredients, such as fresh produce like ripe tomatoes, crispy lettuce, and savory onions topped with numerous condiments, they taste practically gourmet. The abundance of side dishes including pasta salad, potato chips, crunchy cole slaw, and warm baked beans are essential aspects to the impeccable cookout. Requests are always submitted prior to the holiday and one particular item that is continuously selected is my mom’s strawberry pretzel salad. Guaranteed to be the first dish consumed, the sweet and salty mixture is without a doubt an all-time favorite within my family. An additional beloved dessert is sweet, satisfying, and delicious apple pie pulled straight out of the oven still steaming with heat. As I am generally the one preparing this dish, nothing creates a more at home aroma then the smell of the fresh-cut apples tossed in flavorful spices and baked with a buttery, flaky crust baking in the oven.
