Women are the foundation of our society. Anyone who doubts this or argues it truly does not know of the strength and resilience women have and display everyday. Having said this, many works of literature portray women in a somewhat negative light. Women are written off as emotional and volatile beings prone to dramatic behavior and ultimately self-sabotaging. Think of the story of the first woman according to the Bible, Eve is manipulated into eating the forbidden fruit easily. She then offers fruit to Adam which leads to them being cast out of paradise. Yet, Adam didn’t have to take the fruit, did he? Details and context are often not considered when it comes to the actions of women within literature. The men are simply supposed to keep the women safe, and if they fail to do so, it is only the fault of the woman. The fault of men is often looked over in literature, which makes women look bad. This is why The Book of The City of Ladies was such a refreshing read. The feminist perspective portrays women more accurately than most literature I have read. According …show more content…

Her opinions on how women are equal to men and need to be treated so are evident throughout, and I feel like anyone could benefit from this message. The conflicts currently within our society, such as wage inequality, would not be issues if we all had Christine de Pizan’s enlightened perspective after the visit from the three ladies. Women should have all the same opportunities and respect as any man ever gets, and this notion is simple. I hope one day that society will have more in common with the City of Ladies, and that the city will not simply be a symbolic safe place for women to be in.
