Chris McCandless was like any other human being. McCandless wanted to travel around the world and experience new things. Many of us can learn from being surrounded in nature and that is exactly what Chris was trying to accomplish and just like many of us he made a few mistakes. Educated, social, proper and had confidence was how McCandless showed himself to the public. Nothing appeared to be wrong to me as reader or society. Chris even told Walt, “I think my grades will be good enough to get into Harvard law school.” Nor a nutcase or a sociopath would have goals for himself, only a normal human being would be thinking ahead like many of us do. “He shaved, trimmed his hair, and readopted the clean-cut look he’d had in high school. His grades were nearly perfect. He started writing for the school newspaper. He even talked enthusiastically about going on to get a law degree when he graduated.” McCandless parents started hearing and noticing these things that clearly demonstrated that he had everything in order. Even Gallien knew for himself that Chris had not thought things through like he should have. Gallien recalls, “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip.” Unprepared and unaware of his surroundings demonstrates how Chris is a stubborn person and not making the right choice or even being smart about the situation that should have been taken serious. A simple map could have lead him to notice that there was a different path but like many of us humans, we make mistakes. No one is perfect and Chris knew exactly what he was getting himself into.
